CHOOSING THE RIGHT TARANTULA
First of all you will have to decide on which spider would be best for you. There are two types of tarantulas; Arboreal and Terrestrial. An arboreal tarantula is a tree dwelling spider. A terrestrial tarantula is a ground dwelling spider. A terrestrial spider would probably make the best begginer tarantula since they are usually easier to keep. It is best to get a tarantula that is docile and not aggressive because it will be a lot easier to move around without gettig bitten. I have some pictures and information on some good begginer species in the gallary.

HOUSING
An arboreal spider needs a cage setup that is tall so they can climb and make their web retreat. A terrestrial spider needs a cage setup that has more ground space, height is not important. A terrestrial spider also needs something like a piece of bark or a broken pot to hide under. For a substrate you can use potting soil, peat moss, or vermiculite depending on which spider it is for. Any kind of plastic or glass container will work as long as it is big enough for the spider. There should never be two tarantulas in the same cage unless you are triing to breed them. There should always be a water dish available for the spider. It is good to use clean gravel like what comes in fish tanks to put in the water dish to keep feeder insects from drowning. I do not recomend using a sponge because they can hold bacteria which can be harmful to the spider.

HEATING AND HUMIDITY
Some spiders may require a high temperature or humidity level. It is best to use a gauge so you can be sure it is right for the spider. Heating pads will work for a ten gallon tank but not for a small cage. For humidity spray the substrate as needed to keep the humidity at the right level. As you get more spiders it would be best to use a special room with a heater and humidifier to keep all the spiders in. If you need to know what temp. or humidity level a certain species needs then email me and I will be glad to awnser any questions you may have.
